An Empirical Study on Risk Taking in Tournaments

چکیده
Individuals faced by a tournament can oftentimes not only choose their effort level, but also the risk level of their strategy. There are some theoretical contributions on risk taking in tournaments, which mainly point out disadvantages with respect to exerted effort. Empirical evidence is rare. In this paper we analyze risk taking behavior of professional soccer coaches. We find that risk taking concerning the kind of observed substitutions is, indeed, relevant. However, risk taking does not pay off. ∗ Financial support by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), SFB-TR 15 (Governance and the efficiency of economic systems), is gratefully acknowledged. ∗∗ Christian Grund, Department of Economics, BWL 2, University of Bonn, Adenauerallee 24-42, D53113 Bonn, Germany. متن کاملFirm Size as a Moderator between Corporate Governance and Risk-Taking in Malaysian Banks
This study investigates the moderating effect of firm size in the relationship between corporate governance (board size, board independence and ownership concentration) and banks’ risk-taking (insolvency risk and credit risk). Secondary data (annual reports) was collected from a sample of 21 Malaysian commercial banks covering the 2005–2014 accounting period. An empirical model using pooled ord...
متن کاملInterim Rank, Risk Taking and Performance in Dynamic Tournaments
Little is known about the effects of revealing information on relative performance during a dynamic tournament. We empirically study the impact of interim rank on risk taking and performance using data on professionals competing in tournaments for large rewards. As our data allows us to observe both the intended action and the performance of each participant, we can thus measure risk taking and...

Two order e¤ectsmay emerge in dynamic tournaments with information feedback. First, participants adjust e¤ort across stages, which could advantage the leading participant who faces a larger e¤ective prizeafter an initial victory (leading-e¤ect). Second, participants lagging behind may increase risk at the nal stage as they have nothing to lose(risk-taking). We use a randomized natural ex...
متن کاملRisk-Taking Tournaments: Theory and Experimental Evidence
Risk-Taking Tournaments: Theory and Experimental Evidence We study risk-taking behavior in a simple two person tournament in a theoretical model as well as a laboratory experiment. First, a model is analyzed in which two agents simultaneously decide between a risky and a safe strategy and we allow for all possible degrees of correlation between the outcomes of the risky strategies. We show that...
